![]() SR-71 Overhead in Blue Sky |
The SR-71 Blackbird is perhaps the most incredible manned aircraft ever created. It flew faster and higher than any other before or after it, and it's speed and altitude records will stand for a very long time. The SR-71 was designed by Kelly Johnson of Lockheed Martin Corporation, also builder of the famous U-2 spy plane. The last six years of my Air Force career were a very priviliged time as I was assigned to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, California, home of the SR-71 and U-2. I witnessed first hand many of the remarkable accomplishments of the Blackbird, the magnificent men who flew them and all those of us who had to stay on the ground in supporting roles, such as maintenance and intelligence experts. | ![]() 9th SRW Patch |

The Blackbird Association is made up of men and women who served with the SR-71, U-2 and KC-135 aircraft. Started 36 years ago, the Blackbird Association celebrates a reunion every two years in Reno, Nevada. This past June of 2011, the Association held its 19th Reunion. Part of the reunion activites include an auction and raffle to help fund the Association's activities. Members donate items of their craft for the event. For this reunion, we donated two SR-71 Blackbird Clocks which we designed and hand built. We offered to donate fifteen per cent of the price of every clock sold in the future to the Blackbird Association. We obtained a license from Lockheed Martin Corporation to make and sell the clocks. Below are the models available. Help us donate to the Blackbird Association. Thanks, Sid | ![]() Mach 3+ Patch |

The Mace A and B Tactical Nuclear Missiles served as a deterrant force in Germany and Okinawa, Japan. The "A-Bird" was guided by a system known as ATRAN, Automatic Terrain Recognition and Navigation. It was a combination of radar tracking compared with a previously filmed image of the terrain over which it was to fly. The "B-Bird" relied on a more sophisitcated Inertial Navigation System which contained three stabilization gyros mounted on a gimbal. Two accelerometers determined movement in any plane and led the missile to its target. After the deactivation of the A-Bird, twenty of the "pickled" missiles were sent to Eglin AFB, Florida - home of the Gulf Test Range - to be converted to target drones to be used to train fighter pilots and improve air-to-air missiles. The program was successful and became a permanent unit, part of the Tactical Air Warfare Center (TAWC) based at Eglin. I was personally involved in the launch of 121 of the Mace A and B drones. The small, elite group of Airmen, NCOs and Officers were very smart, creative people who could always improvise and be innovative to get the job done and keep the targets flying. It was a privilege to have been a part of that very successful drone program. To learn more about the Mace Missiles, please visit our Links page. |
